Trader killed, 3 hurt in NDFB-S attack

GUWAHATI: A trader was killed and three others were injured in a brazen act of terrorism by cadres of the Songbijit faction of the National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) on Sunday afternoon at Molandhubi Bazar in Kokrajhar district. Four motorcycle-borne militants stormed into a grocery shop and fired at those present from automatic weapons before lobbing three hand grenades at them.Motleb Ali (35) died on the spot after a bullet hit him on his neck while Iman Ali alias Jugani (35) sustained a bullet injury on his leg. Two others at the grocery shop - Nasher Ali (26) and Lansar Marak (29) - were injured in the grenade attack.

Rally-bound Max overturned, 15 hurt

The gathering was organized on the concluding day of the three-day party Politburo and Central Committee meeting. Thousands of party supporters including women took part in the rally at Stable Ground. The injured supporters were immediately rushed to GBP Hospital here for treatment. Some of them, reportedly, were later discharged by after treatment. Police visited the spot. CPIM wins by-poll in Sabroom

Defying all the odds, the CPI (M) on Friday showed the sign of victory in the recently conducted by-election in Sabroom Nagar Panchayat beating the Congress party.There are total nine seats in Sabroom Nagar Panchayat.Sources said, Nibha Basak Dey, CPI (M) candidate for ward number 5 won by 53 votes while another CPI (M) candidate of ward number 8 – Ranjeeta Reang came to the power in the ward by 70 votes. It is worthy to be noted that both Nibha and Ranjeeta were Congress members of their respective wards. Later, they joined CPI (M) after leaving Congress.Likewise, the CPI (M) came to the power in Manu bazaar, Rajibnagar, Paschim Harina, Uttar Bhuratoli, Nabagram, Kalapania, Dakshin Bhuratoli and Kalacherra Panchayat till the last report came.Trinamool Congress secured two seats in Manu bazaar Panchayat and BJP bagged one seat each in Uttar Bhuratoli and Kalapania panchayats.The source added that the CPI(M) came to the power in seven Gram Panchayats including three Panchayat Samities and one Zilla Parishad under Poyanbari Block.

Panchayat poll ends amidst violence

Over 87 percent voters on Tuesday casted their votes in the elections to the three-tier gram panchayat in Left-ruled Tripura, officials said here.Inspector General of Police Nepal Das told that the nine-hour balloting that ended 4 p.m. was peaceful barring clashes among political activists in three places.State Election Commission secretary Tamal Majumder told, "More than 87 percent voters exercised their franchise in the rural bodies' polling."Counting of ballots will be held on Friday, he added.Opposition parties, including the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party, complained that ruling CPI-M (Communist Party of India-Marxist) activists assaulted their workers at different places.For the first time, 50 percent seats in gram panchayats, panchayat samitis and zilla parishads have been reserved for women, state Election Commissioner Y. Kumar said.Voting was held for 5,129 seats in gram panchayats, 381 seats in panchayat samitis and 398 seats in zilla parishads.Candidates backed by CPI-M have already won unopposed 980 seats in gram panchayats, 38 seats in panchayat samitis and two seats in zilla parishads.The NOTA (None Of The Above) provision has been made available for the first time on the ballot papers.In the last elections to the local bodies five years ago, the CPI-M-led Left Front secured a majority in 414 gram panchayats and in all the panchayat samitis and zilla parishads.

Malaria claims 143 lives, Central team to visit Dhalai

At least 143 people, including 35 children, have died and more than 16,000 others have fallen ill since the first week of this month. Of the 16,000 ill people, malaria germ was found in the blood of 3,648 patients, said Health Minister Badal Choudhury tonight. With the death of three more children- Chabiya Reang (05), Babita Reang (06) and Boikonjon Halam (09) in Ganganagar and Dharmanagar today, the death toll has reached 143. All the affected people have been admitted to various government hospitals in five districts

Highest stress was laid on ensuring hundred per cent institutional treatments. Meanwhile, a three-member team of malaria experts from the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry led by Dr Awadesh Kumar arrived here in the morning to supervise the situation and advice the state government on how to deal with the outbreak. Soon after the arrival, the team of malaria experts- Dr Satyajit Sen and Dr Sukhbir Singh held a meeting with National Health Mission Director Dr Sandip N Mahatme, Health Director Dr SR Debbarma and Family Welfare Director Dr KL Bhowmik at Health Directorate, Gorkhabasti. The team suggested for use of second generation of medicines. The medical experts will visit the malaria-affected areas- Gandacherra and Longtarai Valley tomorrow for supervision of controlling of the disease. Several medical teams are working in the disease-affected areas. Besides, a special team from the Agartala Government Medical College would also visit the affected areas in the next few days to assess the reason behind massive outbreak. Chief Minister Manik Sarkar at a series of meetings with doctors, officials and ministers reviewed the situation. He asked his ministers to rush to the malaria-hit areas and stay there till the situation improves. A helicopter is on standby to ferry doctors and patients in an emergency.

Over 5000 Congress workers and 220 local leaders joined the newly formed Tripura unit of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), the party's chairman in the state, Ratan Chakraborty, said on Sunday."Over 500 Congress workers led by 220 local leaders joined TMC today (Sunday). More top Congress leaders, members and supporters would soon join the party (TMC)," Chakraborty told reporters.In the presence of the leaders and workers who joined the party from the Congress, Chakraborty said that the TMC would now be the key opposition party to oust the ruling Left Front from the helm of affairs in TripuraCurrently, the Congress is the main opposition party in India's lone Left-ruled state.The Congress leaders who on Sunday joined the TMC included Sadar district president Tapan Datta and Pradesh Congress committee member Subrata Dey.Chakraborty along with former Tripura Congress chief Surajit Datta and former opposition leader Jawar Saha, all former ministers, earlier this month joined the TMC, headed by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.Banerjee appointed Datta and Saha as the president and vice-chairman of the Tripura unit of the TMC.The disgruntled leaders, who were against the elevation of the former Tripura chief minister and ex-state party chief Samir Ranjan Barman's son Sudip Roy Burman, first as Tripura Congress head and then as leader of opposition in the state assembly, claimed that the present leadership of the Congress helped the Left Front return to power in Tripura.

IRB Infrastructure rises 5% on bagging Solapur road project

nvestors bought shares of  IRB Infrastructure Developers  on Tuesday after the company emerged as a preferred bidder for Solapur road project. The stock gained as much as 5 percent intraday. "IRB Infra has emerged as a preferred bidder for the project of four laning of Solapur to Yedeshi section of NH-211 from km 0.00 to km 100 in the state of Maharashtra to be executed as BOT (toll) on DBFOT pattern under NHDP Phase-IV," the company said in its filing. The estimated project cost of the company is approximately Rs 1500 crore. IRB has sought Rs 189 crore as viability gap funding from NHAI, it said in the release. Concession period for the project is 29 years and construction period for the same is 910 days. This order will increase the EPC order book of the company from Rs 5,053 crore to Rs 6,553 crore and will take the total order book size to Rs 8,529 crore. Analysts feel this order will provide a strong fillip to construction earnings of the company. At 11:00 hours IST, the stock was trading at Rs 91.35, up 3.34 percent over previous close on the BSE.

The central team of malaria expert of union ministry of health and family welfare arrived here today to assess causes of malaria outbreak that claimed more than 40 lives in last one month. The team is lead by Dr. Avadesh Kumar additional director of of the National Vector Born Disease Control Program, Dr. Satyabrata Sen regional director (malaria) and a senior technician met senior doctors, officials at the office of state health department Gorkhabsti. The central expert team schedule to move the affected areas of Dhalai district tomorrow.

 An official of health department said that today another consignment of anti – malarial drugs compromising of Quinine, Actal, Artesunate and chloroquin reached today by air cargo.

The deaths in a malaria outbreak in Tripura have risen to 41, including 31 children; a minister said here Sunday.Over 22,000 people have fallen ill in the tribal-dominated mountainous areas of Dhalai, Gomti, Khowai, North Tripura and South Tripura districts. All the affected people have been admitted to various government hospitals in five districts, he said.

CPI (M) demands CBI enquiry against Mamata Banerjee & TMC leaders 

Kolkata : After Suspended Trinamool Congress MP Kunal Ghosh named Mamata Banerjee and 12 other TMC leaders in the Saradha Group chit fund scam, CPI (M) leader Mohammed Salim demanded CBI enquiry against Banerjee and other leaders. He said that the whole investigation is a drama by the Bengal CM and that the arrest of Ghosh is a part of the same. He said that Ghosh was close to Banerjee and he was taken in party after he became the CEO of the Saradha Group.

NCP supports Rio's candidature from Nagaland for LS polls

Kohima:: Nagaland unit of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has decided to extend full support to the candidature of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio from the state's lone seat in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. Neiphiu Rio is the consensus candidate of Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN), a pre-poll alliance comprising NPF, BJP and JD(U), towards which the four legislators of NCP have been extending outside support in the stateAssembly. The decision to this effect was taken at last night's meeting of NCP leaders and legislators, NCP Legislature Party leader T M Lotha said here today. He said the party and its legislators thoroughly deliberated on the prevailing political development following DAN's unanimous decision to support the candidature of Rio for the LS electionsin the state. NCP expressed hope that as an MP, Rio would be able to play an effective role at the Centre, besides pushing the ongoing Naga peace process for finding an early solution. Declaring Rio as the consensus candidate of DAN recently in Kohima, Chairman of the DAN Coordination Committee Shurhozolie Liezietsu had requested other political parties in the state to extend support to him in the interest of the Naga people.However, Opposition Congress in the state has categorically refused to support Rio, stating that if at all the ruling NPF wanted all the parties to support a consensus candidate, a proper meeting of political parties in the state should have been held prior to declaration of the DAN consensus candidate. 

Chit Fund: Govt not responsible 

“State government is not responsible for the chit fund-scam in the state. Even, state government will not repay the investments of depositors”, said Chief Minister Manik Sarkar at Tripura Legislative Assembly this afternoon.He was speaking at the House when opposition members asked him to respond to their demand. Chaos prevailed in the House with opposition MLAs demanding that the government provide protection to depositors who had invested in NBFCs. “We will not follow the footsteps of West Bengal government. The investment in NBFCs is the sum of income tax”, Sarkar added.

RAIGANJ/WEST BENGAL: Had it not been for the huge interest being paid to the Centre on loans taken by the erstwhile Left Front government, large-scale employment would have been possible in WB, Chief Minister Mamata said today."While in 2011-12, the Centre and the Reserve Bank of India took away Rs 21,000 toward debt servicing, in 2012-13 they took Rs 25,000 crore out of Rs 32,000 crore that we earned," she said.

Left calls for alternative policy platform

“Both parties- Congress and BJP are not only competing to indulge in massive corruption but are also pursuing disastrous economic policies at the Centre and in states ruled by them”, the CPIM general secretary maintained. Karat appealed to all democratic and secular parties to support this platform in the interests of the vast masses of exploited and impoverished people. “To defeat both Congress and BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Left parties will join hands with other secular parties”, the CPIM stalwart added.
