Lucknow: In his maiden public appearance as a Bharatiya Janata Party member, former Indian Army chief General VK Singh on Sunday took a dig at the Congress party saying its claim of army's welfare was a sham.
Sharing the dais with
BJP's prime-ministerial candidate Narendra Modi at party's Vijay
Shankhnad Maha Rally here, Singh questioned Centre's policies with
regards to the armed forces and asked, "What they are telling about
welfare of armed forces is misleading. What happened that the Navy
Chief had to quit?” Ceasing the opportunity to drum support
for the party in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Singh addressed
the crowd at the rally saying, “When you go back from here, go with
the determination that you will get as many people to vote for the
BJP.”The former Army chief after appearing for Anna Hazare's
anti-corruption bandwagon, joined the BJP on Saturday, calling it
the only "nationalist party" and expressed his desire to "work for
the nation".
Mumbai: The Indian
Premier League (IPL) match-fixing
scandal seems to be getting murkier with each passing day. In the
latest revelations, it has come to fore that even the investigating
agency, the Tamil Nadu CB-CID, is in cahoots with bookies and is
refraining from examining the match-fixing angle by confining the
probe to a betting caseAfter some crucial inputs were
extracted from Bollywood actor Vindu Dara Singh, who
revealed how some bigwigs of Indian sports and politics were
involved in betting and match fixing, Zee News has come up
with yet another stunning exposé in relation to the IPL scandal,
which explains how the links of the match-fixing run deeper than
assumed, even involving the police. It has also emerged that
there is aDawood Ibrahim link to match fixing and the
underworld don's aides may be working on a new betting
website in the UK for IPL-7. The revelations have been
made by G Sampath Kumar, a Tamil Nadu-basedpolice
officer who had deposed before the Justice Mudgal Committee,
and spilled the beans on the details of IPL
match-fixing. Deposing before the panel, Kumar had said that
hotelier Vikram Aggrawal informed Kitty, a bookie, that a
match-fixing deal between Rajasthan (RR) and Chennai (CSK) had
been agreed via Gurunath Meiyappan. He was earlier posted as
the Superintendent of Police with the Q Branch CID
(internal security) in Chennai, but was later shifted to the
Railways. Kumar says that he stumbled upon the meandering
details of IPL match-fixing and betting maze while working on the
case of fake passports. In an exclusive chat with
Zee Media Corp, G Sampath Kumar claims that the officers of
the investigating agency (CB-CID Chennai Police) are trying to save
the culprits by hiding the match-fixing angle of the story, as
there has been a considerable amount of
money transactions between top police officials and hotelier
Vikram Aggrawal.
Following are some
explosive excerpts:
Sampath Kumar: After I had
zeroed in on Harish Bajaj following the recovery of Rs
9.39 lakhs from one of his aides, SP Anbu (who was later posted to
CB-CID) sent to me an advocate. The advocate offered me some money
and assured that Harish Bajaj has nothing to do with hawala or
passport racketing and that he is just involved in betting. (Later
in the sting, Kumar speaks of SP Anbu as a police officer who
protects bookies.)
Patna: As RJD's
Parliamentary Board meeting is scheduled to take place on
Sunday, the party chief Lalu Prasad's deadline to Congress on the
seat sharing will end later in the day. Lalu had yesterday
offered 11 seats to Congress with a deadline to accept
the offer by today. Besides Congress, RJD has also offered one seat
of the total 40 seats to NCP. Lalu's offer to Congress
comes within days after LJP had walked over to the BJP camp,
repatching with it almost after a decade. Prasad, who returned
here from Delhi yesterday, said he had told Congressgeneral
secretary and in-charge of Bihar C P Joshi of the
offer. "I have asked him to communicate acceptance before RJD
Parliamentary Board meeting in Patna on Sunday at 3 PM," Prasad
told reporters. Asked to comment why the alliance between
RJD and Congress was stuck, he said the offer did not mean that
"everything is over" between the two parties on the
issue. "I have also told Joshi
that if his party stakes claim for any other seat than he
should tell me and also convince me of the winning potential of his
expected candidate," he said.

case in Manabazar police station," he added.
KOLKATA:
A 22-year-old man died on Friday after being
allegedly beaten up by bouncers at a
bar the previous night. His death triggered a mob rampage at the
bar in Dum Dum's Shyamnagar on Saturday evening, with the
protesters placing the body on the road and disrupting traffic for
hours.
Madhav
Das, a resident of Naskarpara near Chinar Park, had gone to
Kingston Bar near Shelly Cinema around 9.30pm on Thursday. When he
failed to return till midnight, his wife got worried. A little
while later, a stranger called her to say "someone she knew" was
lying unconscious and bleeding opposite the pub. Madhav's relatives
and friends rushed to the ....
and found him lying
between buses on Jessore Road, covered in blood, just as the caller
said. On asking around, they
were told that Madhav had picked an argument with the bouncers in a
drunken state. The quarrel turned violent and he was beaten up and
thrown on the opposite side of the road. Madhav's family took him
to NRS Hospital, which referred him to SSKM. They say doctors there
took their time to begin treatment, so they adm-itted him to a
nursing home near Sealdah. Madhav died on Friday
morning.
"I was asked to come and claim the body of my husband on Thursday
night. When I asked the bouncers who did this to him, they merely
said he had slipped and fallen from the stairs. I was shocked
because his injuries did not look accidental," said his
widow.
Bimal Gurung to meet Mamata Banerjee on jailed leaders
DARJEELING: Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) president Bimal
Gurung on Thursday left for Kolkata to meet chief minister Mamata
Banerjee on her invitation to discuss Darjeeling's
problems.
Gurung refused to speak to
the media, but party leaders in Darjeeling said he will press for
the release of arrested Morcha leaders and (GTA) sabhasads.
"The state government promised to release our arrested leaders and
sabhasads. But after so many months they are still languishing in
jail. This is giving rise to resentment among common people too,"
said a central committee leader, who didn't want to be
quoted. More than 1500 people were
arrested during the August-September agitation for statehood.
Senior leaders and GTA members too have been arrested.
However, some of the arrested persons were later granted bail. Out
of the 12 sabhasads arrested, including GJM assistant
secretary , Binay Tamang four have so far been
released.
While, fresh cases are
being tagged by the police on the leaders granted bail by the
court, this has made the GJM unhappy. Accompanying Gurung are
Trilok Dewan, the Darjeeling MLA and R B Bhujel, a central
committee leader. GJM general secretary Roshan Giri, who is now in
Delhi, will join them on Friday. The Darjeeling MLA, over phone
from Kolkata this evening, said Gurung and Banerjee will have a
one-to-one meeting. The demand on placing all
the Gorkha communities of the Darjeeling Hills except the Scheduled
Caste under the tribal status will also be discussed. A few days
back, the GJM chief had said he would persuade the Bengal CM to
pressure the Union government to take up this demand
immediately.
Guwahati: Congress vice
president Rahul Gandhi, who is touring different parts of the
country in order to revive his party's fortunes, was welcomed with
kisses on his cheek and on his head during his visit to Jorhat in
Assam on Wednesday. Rahul Gandhi was interacting with a huge
gathering of women, when two women came closer to him, kissed on
his cheek and forehead, slightly embarrassing the young Congress
leader. Despite the unprecedented but pleasant gesture, the
Gandhi scion, however, sportingly met all the women supporters who
came forward to shake hands with him. Rahul met over 600 self
help groups and Congress members in Jorhat and interacted with them
wholeheartedly. While interacting with the women, the Congress vice
president said that women of this country can become the prime
minister, chief minister. He also said that northeastern women are
more talented and brave than others. Gandhi also advocated for
50 percent reservation for the female community in the parliament
and state assemblies. “Women have more confidence, will power,
patience and talent," he said. The Congress vice president
said he would rather make women travelling in a bus safe than see
India becoming a superpower.
