UGC rules out AICTE role in engineering college approvals
CHENNAI: The power to approve as well as affiliate engineering colleges would now be vested with the respective state technical universities, said Dr H Devaraj, vice-chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC). Speaking at the Indian Science and Engineering Fair organized by the city-based Agni College of Technology in association with the Science Society of India (SSI) here on Saturday, Devaraj said that henceforth engineering colleges need not queue up before the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for renewal of approval every year. A decision to this effect was taken at the UGC's meeting on Friday, and it would be put into operation in a week or 10 days, he said. At the finals of the fair, the first grand gold meal was bagged by Tenith Adithyaa, a class XI student of Hindu Higher Secondary School, Watrap for his project on environment, titled 'Banana Leaf Technology'. The second price was bagged by Manisi Nilesh Bhai Dalsania and Kairavi Dipak Bhai Racchadiya, both students of Class IX at Shree G K Dholakiya Schools, Rajkot in Gujarat. The city's Chettinad Vidhyashram was declared third grand total medal winners. A total of 50 students, who had already won the regional fairs held in Chennai, Mumbai, Rajkot and Mangalore, had displayed science projects such as remote piloted aerial vehicle, artificial intelligence robots, low cost bio gas plant, hybrid bicycle and herbal mouthwash, said R N Jayaprakash, managing trustee of Agni College of Technology.
